The Ins and Outs of Ultherapy
Ultherapy is the only non-invasive treatment approved by the FDA for lines and wrinkles from brow to chest. It uses ultrasound technology to stimulate collagen production at the deep layers of skin, which allows practitioners to see layers of tissue during the treatment and target the areas that hold the most benefit. Unlike lasers, which use light energy, Ultherapy can reach deeper skin layers and lift the tissue. The treatment stimulates the production of collagen, a natural protein in the skin that provides support and makes the skin look smooth and plump.
What's the Treatment Like?
Ultherapy treatments vary according to the area being treated. Treatment of the face and neck takes around 60-90 minutes. Treatment of the chest usually takes 30 minutes. Patients report feelings of tiny energy bursts – it may sting, buzz or tickle, depending on the candidate, but is not necessarily painful. No toxins or needles are involved in treatment, and the sensation only lasts while the treatment is being delivered, which is a sign of new collagen building. There is no downtime after the procedure. You may see some changes immediately, although the full effects won't be noticeable for two to three months.
What's the Difference Between Ultherapy and Thermage?
Thermage and Ultherapy are used for similar skin conditions. Thermage is a different kind of treatment using radio-frequency waves on the skin’s surface. Unlike Ultherapy, Thermage radio-frequency waves induce heat in the skin to stimulate collagen production causing discomfort during the procedure. Thermage is less likely to give you a noticeable benefit compared to Ultherapy and is less effective if the skin has more visible damage.
Anything Else I Should Know?
Almost anyone can undergo Ultherapy treatment. The ideal candidate has otherwise healthy skin, good general health but has mild to moderate sagging skin. Most patients recover quickly without any problems. Your skin may look flushed, but any redness disappears within a few hours. Occasionally patients experience a tingling sensation, slight tenderness, or some minor swelling. Less frequently, you might have temporary bruising or experience a slight sensation of numbness in the area where the skin was treated.
