What is Chronic Fatigue?
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a disorder characterized by severe fatigue not explained by another medical cause.
Causes of Chronic Fatigue
The causes of chronic fatigue may be linked to suspected issues like a viral infection, a compromised immune system, stress, or hormonal imbalances. Because of the many different factors that can contribute, there are no tests for chronic fatigue.
Symptoms of Chronic Fatigue
In order to diagnose chronic fatigue, your doctor will take a complete medical history and ask you about any current conditions or medications. Blood testing cannot verify chronic fatigue, but it can rule out other conditions that produce similar symptoms.
Common symptoms of chronic fatigue include:
- Severe and ongoing fatigue that does not improve after rest.
- Noticeably worse symptoms after physical or mental activity.
- Difficulty with mental concentration or retaining information.
- Insomnia and sleep disturbances alongside poor quality sleep.
- Muscle pain and joint pain that does not produce swelling.
- Frequent sore throat not caused by other known infections.
- Tender and swollen lymph nodes in the armpits or the neck.
People in their 40s and 50s are at the greatest risk for CFS. Women are significantly more likely than men to experience the condition. Because this condition is relatively rare, there is little information about how a family history of chronic fatigue affects an individual’s odds of developing it.
What Foods Can Help?
Several different foods can enhance your body’s ability to break down nutrients into energy. No one food or one specific diet has been proven to reverse CFS or completely eliminate symptoms.
Dietary changes that could help with CFS include:
- Eliminate Inflammatory Foods: CFS is likely to be related to systemic inflammation throughout the body. Many foods, especially acidic foods like coffee, can contribute to inflammation. Sugar, fried foods, and processed foods are associated with inflammation as well. You can eliminate some of these from your diet and experiment with anti-inflammatory foods like fish and olive oil.
- Focus on Hydration: Staying hydrated helps your body’s systems to be more efficient. It’s important to drink water on a regular basis, aim for 8 cups a day.
- Eat More Leafy Greens and Dark-Colored Fruits: Leafy green vegetables such as lettuce, chard, kale, and turnip greens are a vital part of an anti-fatigue diet. Try to formulate a diverse, colorful diet where at least 20% of your calories come from vegetables. Dark fruits with natural sugars like apples and blueberries may also help.
