Chemical Peels in NYC

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is an aesthetic rejuvenation procedure that resurfaces the skin and removes damaged top layers of the skin, leaving younger-looking, smooth skin. A chemical peel is often paired with other cosmetic procedures, such as dark circle removal treatment or Botox treatment, and can be performed during a short office visit to New York Center for Aesthetic Rejuvenation.

Why are chemical peels used?

Chemical peels are used to treat minor skin imperfections (usually on the face), including:

  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Discoloration
  • Acne scars
  • Sun damage
  • Prior injury scars
  • Enlarged pores

What kinds of chemical peels are available?

There are numerous different types of chemical peels, which vary depending on the need of each patient. In general, chemical peels can be divided into categories based on the depth of skin removal needed:

Light Chemical Peels

A light chemical peel, also known as a superficial chemical peel, removes only the outermost layer of skin cells, leaving the rest unharmed. It can help patients who are suffering from uneven skin tone, acne, dry skin, or fine wrinkles.

Medium Chemical Peels

A medium chemical peel takes damaged skin cells that are on the outer layer of skin as well as parts of the middle layer of skin. It is usually used to treat small scars, wrinkles, or uneven skin tones.

Deep Chemical Peels

A deep chemical peel removes damaged skin cells all the way down to the mid-lower layer of skin. These may be used when a patient is suffering from very deep wrinkles or precancerous skin lesions.

What does a chemical peel involve?

Before your chemical peel, one of our experienced physicians will consult with you to answer any questions you may have. The short, in-office procedure can be done during the same time as your consultation, if you choose.

Before undergoing a chemical peel, your doctor will clean your face and make sure that your hair and eyes are protected with gauze or another covering. For chemical peels that are medium or deep, your doctor may also give you a sedative to ensure you are comfortable throughout the procedure.

During the chemical peel, you will lie comfortably while the solution is applied to your skin. Within a few minutes, the peel will be removed and any damaged skin cells come off with the solution.

After the procedure, you may have some reddening on your face or feel a slight tingling sensation, which should subside shortly after.
