Kegel Exercises

What are Kegels?

The Kegels, also called the vaginal muscles or pelvic floor muscles, control your ability to urinate as well as keep the vagina tight and enable you to feel your partner well during sex. These muscles help to support your bladder, uterus, rectum, and small intestine, making them important not only for sexual gratification, but for overall body function as well.

What are Kegel exercises?

Your Kegels are muscles, just like any other in your body, and in order to maintain them, you must work them out just like your legs, arms, or abs. Kegel exercises are recommended in order to keep your Kegel muscles in shape, to improve sexual pleasure, and to prevent urinary incontinence and other health issues.

What causes the Kegel muscles to become weaker?

The Kegel muscles can weaken after any of the following:

  • Childbirth
  • Aging
  • Chronic coughing
  • Chronic constipation
  • Surgery
  • Overweight / obesity

Why are Kegel exercises important?

It is important to visit a women’s health specialist at New York Center for Aesthetic Rejuvenation if you are suffering from any of the following symptoms of weakened Kegel muscles:

  • Urinary incontinence (constant urge to urinate)
  • Urine leakage / Stress incontinence (urine leakage when coughing or sneezing)
  • Fecal incontinence (stool leakage)

How do I do Kegel exercises?

To help strengthen your Kegel muscles, try tightening the muscles for about 10 seconds at a time. After resting for a moment, repeat the process. Spending about 5 minutes each day can help to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, improve sexual pleasure, and prevent future health problems.

If you have trouble finding the Kegel muscles, try to stop during the middle of urination. Your Kegel muscles perform a number of bodily tasks, including controlling your bladder.
